pop3 server login attempts by a bot?

I have xmail running on linux, with only a few users on two domains. Using phpxmail to check the POP3 server log, I find many failed login attempts by the same IP address. It looks like a bot is put to work on my server to try to find a valid passwordto login and compromise my server.
Is there a way to stop this after a certain number of failed login attempts? Should I be worried about this situation? Does this happen to anyone else?
